Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Workshops
Dealing With Personality Differences Using The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

Have you ever, with noble and kind-hearted intentions, tried to logically explain your actions or opinions to another, only to be met with a confused look or an angry reaction? Have you ever felt while considering a problem or issue, you were on "another planet" from the rest of the team even though they were looking at the same problem as you? Have you ever asked someone what you thought was an honest question and they thought you were insinuating that they are a "moron"?

These are three very common interpersonal dilemmas described by technical contributors as they interact with clients, colleagues and even friends or loved ones. This half-day workshop provides a clear, interactive and fun overview of personality preferences and styles that can serve as a strong foundation course for any interpersonal skills training.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is widely used instrument to help technical consultants and project teams identify communication strengths and "blind spots". It has also proven useful in understanding why you might sometimes have a difficult time influencing colleagues, bosses, employees or friends. In highly technical or diverse work groups, the MBTI is a useful way to understand the concerns or "hot buttons" of non-technical clients, a critical skill when you are counting on strong buy-in during periods of change or transition.

Who Should Attend

Anyone interested in learning about different personalities and work styles and how to use that knowledge to deal more effectively with colleagues, bosses, employees, clients, family or friends.

Workshop Objectives

At the end of the seminar, you will be able to:
  • Understand personality types so they can better understand themselves and others.

  • Improve the effectiveness of communications with others through an increased awareness of their own and other's communication styles and preferences.

  • Use a "common language" provided by the MBTI throughout the organization which should ultimately help improve the participant's overall effectiveness in their dealings with employees, colleagues, bosses and clients.

Additionally, participants who have taken the MBTI Workshop report the following major benefits:

  • Easier Client Relationship Building. Understanding how your clients process information and make decisions can impact your sales or influencing approach and, ultimately, revenue. In addition, some clients can be difficult to communicate with simply because they have a different style from you. Knowledge of these differences, together with techniques for overcoming them can actually enhance relationships with clients.

  • More Cohesive Teams. Projects with diverse agendas and cross-functional roles require a fair amount of teamwork to be successful. There are often vast differences in personalities between developers, client staff and administrative or sales staff. Each group has strengths and weaknesses. There is certainly no shortage of strong opinions. The MBTI helps teams to appreciate individual contributions and to take advantage of team members' strengths. It also helps to make sure that weaknesses don't have too bad an impact on team results.

  • Time Saving. A lot of time that is wasted when people "talk around" conflict or disagreement, rather than cutting through things and resolving issues. The MBTI makes this task easier. In addition, knowledge of how people process information, organize themselves and make decisions allows for more efficiency in communication.

  • Better Understanding of Self. Many participants report that the MBTI, because it emphasizes the "celebration of differences", is a very personally affirming experience. Materials provided not only point out clear strengths, but also provide insights into areas of potential growth and development.

Workshop Agenda

  • Self assessment of personality and communication strengths

  • "Where do you get your wires crossed" - examining the reasons for and sources of personality "clashes"

  • Eight personality preferences and how they facilitate productivity or conflict

  • Understanding your communication style and using it effectively to interact with others

  • Impact of one's "Type" when working on a team

  • Group exercises designed to apply knowledge about the MBTI and demonstrate understanding of personality types different from their own
